CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Football, as the most popular sport globally, attracts millions of participants and spectators. However, it also carries a significant risk of injuries due to its physical demands. Understanding the prevalence and pattern of football-related injuries is crucial for developing effective preventive strategies. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and pattern of football-related injuries among football clubs in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State.

Football-related injuries are a major concern for players at all levels, from amateur to professional. The prevalence of these injuries varies widely, with studies reporting injury rates ranging from 2 to 13 injuries per 1000 hours of exposure (Ekstrand et al., 2016). Injuries in football are not only frequent but also diverse, affecting various parts of the body and leading to different severities and recovery times. For instance, a study by Waldén et al. (2015) reported that lower extremity injuries, particularly hamstring strains, are the most common in football, accounting for up to 37% of all injuries.

The pattern of injuries in football can be influenced by several factors, including the level of play, age, and gender of the players, as well as the playing conditions and the type of training (Brito et al., 2018). Typically, the majority of football injuries occur during matches rather than training sessions, with contact injuries being more prevalent during competitive matches. Non-contact injuries, on the other hand, often occur due to overuse or improper training techniques (Rathleff et al., 2016).

A systematic review by López-Valenciano et al. (2020) highlighted that muscle strains, ligament sprains, and contusions are among the most common types of injuries in football. Specifically, hamstring injuries are frequently observed, followed by injuries to the ankle and knee. The study also noted a higher incidence of injuries at the start and end of the season, likely due to varying fitness levels and accumulated fatigue.

Several intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to the occurrence of football-related injuries. Intrinsic factors include age, previous injury history, and physical fitness levels. Younger players and those with a history of previous injuries are more susceptible to sustaining new injuries (Mendiguchia et al., 2019). Extrinsic factors encompass environmental conditions, type of playing surface, and the level of competition (Gomez et al., 2017). For instance, playing on artificial turf has been associated with a higher risk of certain types of injuries compared to natural grass (Björneboe et al., 2018).

In Nigeria, football is a widely followed and played sport, with significant participation at the grassroots level. However, there is limited research specifically focusing on the prevalence and patterns of football-related injuries within Nigerian football clubs. Studies conducted in other regions provide some insights but may not fully capture the unique context of Nigerian football. For instance, Adewumi et al. (2018) emphasized the need for more localized research to understand the specific injury patterns and risk factors prevalent in Nigerian football clubs.

This study is significant as it aims to fill the research gap concerning football-related injuries in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State. By identifying the prevalence and patterns of these injuries, the findings can inform targeted interventions and prevention strategies. Such measures are essential to enhance player safety, reduce injury rates, and improve the overall quality of football in the region.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Football, being one of the most popular sports globally, is associated with a high risk of injuries due to its physically demanding nature. The prevalence and pattern of football-related injuries have significant implications for players' health, team performance, and healthcare costs (Ekstrand, 2016). Despite extensive research on football injuries in various contexts, there is limited data specific to local football clubs in developing regions such as Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State, Nigeria. This gap in knowledge is critical because regional variations in training practices, healthcare infrastructure, and playing conditions may influence injury patterns and their management (Bahr et al., 2020).

Injuries in football can range from minor bruises to severe conditions such as ligament tears and fractures. These injuries not only affect players' performance but can also lead to long-term health consequences, including chronic pain and early onset of osteoarthritis (Hägglund et al., 2016). Moreover, the patterns of injuries may differ based on factors such as age, skill level, and playing position. For example, defenders and midfielders might experience different types of injuries compared to forwards due to the distinct physical demands of their roles on the field (Waldén et al., 2015).

Previous studies have highlighted the high incidence of injuries in football, with injury rates reported to be between 4 and 8 injuries per 1,000 hours of exposure (Soligard et al., 2016). However, these studies are primarily focused on professional and elite levels, often in developed countries with advanced medical facilities and rigorous training programs. The context of football clubs in Gombe, where resources and medical support may be limited, remains under-explored. This lack of localized data hampers the development of targeted injury prevention strategies and appropriate medical responses tailored to the specific needs of these athletes.

Understanding the prevalence and pattern of football-related injuries in Gombe is crucial for several reasons. First, it will provide a baseline for monitoring trends over time and evaluating the effectiveness of implemented interventions. Second, it will inform coaches, players, and healthcare providers about common injury risks, promoting the adoption of preventive measures (Junge & Dvorak, 2017). Lastly, it will contribute to the broader body of knowledge on sports injuries, highlighting the unique challenges faced by football clubs in this region.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the prevalence and pattern of football-related injuries among football clubs in the Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State. By doing so, it seeks to fill the existing knowledge gap and support the development of evidence-based strategies to enhance player safety and performance.
